Aussie lingo and Micah-ese.

Here's a list of some Aussie words that Andrew and I have come across during our time here. We've had to look some of them up or ask the person saying them to clarify....:)

fortnight = two weeks. Micah and I's MOPS groups meets every fortnight (had to have the leader explain that one for me).

chemist = druggist

chook = chicken.

wog = virus (a staple in any mum's vocabulary!)

boot = trunk of car

lounge = living room. Over coffee, a friend mentioned that she had bought a new picture to hang on the wall of her 'lounge.' First thing that came to mind was a smoky room w/ people sitting in red, fuzzy chairs, drinking martini's.

zed = z. Andrew is constantly telling me that I need to say, 'zed' instead of 'z' when I'm spelling out our last name.

surgery = doctor's office. This one threw me for a loop when I was trying to take Micah for his shots. The big 'SURGERY' sign kind of freaked me out.

arvo = afternoon. Andrew actually had to google this one. :)

postie = postman

Instead of 'how are you?' Aussie's say 'how ya going?'

Finally, thought we'd throw in some of Micah's new lingo. Over the past 2 weeks he's been very 'chatty.' In the midst of the babble, we've heard some pretty consistent words. In addition to his, 'mama' 'da' 'hi' and 'bye', we now have the following:

BARB! = bird. Micah is currently obsessed w/ anything that flies - planes, helicopters, and birds. The kid will literally run across a field pointing at a plane or helicopter in the sky. He's got hearing like a bat and just freezes when he hears the hum of a plane engine. We think this interest is due to his early exposure to watching Grandpa Al fly his plane in Houston. That, and we always tell him that the plane is Grandpa Al checking up on him. :)

woof = dog (Micah also has a new interest in animals - thank God, we live next door to the zoo!)

snorting like a pig = pig, obviously

'he-low = hello. :)

Not a huge vocabulary range but it's been fun to see what is motivating him to talk and what his interests truly are! :)
